Hey, all!
I have a really cool action for you!
The amazing Laura Friedman has introduced a bill in the state legislature called the California Reusable Beverage Container Act (AB 2762).
The bill would:
Require major beverage companies to sell an increasing percentage of their drinks in reusable, refillable containers over the course of 10 years
Slash plastic pollution, reduce packaging waste, and tackle litter by reducing single-use plastic bottles and creating a state-wide circular economy for beverages
Save local government and taxpayer money by reducing recycling and litter management costs
Create good green jobs; reusables create jobs in transporting, sorting, washing and refilling
Support frontline communities and environmental justice efforts by reducing dependence on toxic plastic, which pollutes at every step of production, from extraction to disposal
Hold corporations accountable for their waste and ensure beverage companies make better packaging choices for people and the planet
This is an exciting opportunity. A reusable, refillable beverage bill like this has never been passed before in the US. Let’s get it done!
The organization Story of Stuff is co-sponsoring the bill, and they’ve posted two easy ways we can help. First, they have an easy call tool so you can contact your Assemblymember and ask them to support the bill. You can find it here. I just called and it took about thirty seconds.
Second, they will send you postcards that you can fill out and mail to your CA reps! They even provide stamps! So cool! Request your cards here.
Story of Stuff is one of my favorite environmental orgs and I love that they’re working on this bill. Let’s help get it passed!
I ordered my postcards already! Now it’s your turn. 😄
More soon.
